Trends in the Organizational Transformation of Enterprise Groups in the Era of AI Agents

Abstract
The rapid development of large language models, generative artificial intelligence, and multi-agent systems is driving enterprise digital transformation from “system-assisted operation” toward “agent-based collaboration.” The widespread application of agents does not merely improve local work efficiency; rather, it will further reshape the organizational structure, decision-making mechanisms, boundary forms, capability systems, and headquarters functions of enterprise groups. Based on organizational design theory, transaction cost theory, and dynamic capabilities theory, this paper reviews the evolutionary process of organizational transformation in enterprise groups and analyzes the trends of organizational transformation in the age of agents. The study finds that organizational transformation in enterprise groups in the age of agents is mainly reflected in the following aspects: organizational structures are shifting from hierarchical bureaucracy to platform-based, networked, and agent-augmented organizations; decision-making mechanisms are moving from experience-driven decision-making to hybrid decision-making that integrates data, algorithms, and managerial judgment; organizational boundaries are evolving from internal group boundaries to data boundaries, algorithmic boundaries, and ecosystem boundaries; organizational capabilities are being upgraded from digital capabilities to agent orchestration capabilities; and enterprise group headquarters are transforming from “control-oriented headquarters” to “intelligent orchestration headquarters.”
