Abstract
Developed countries have accumulated rich experience in the construction of senior housing, with specialized research, design, and management teams. Their architectural designs, management, and services are more humanized. China has entered an aging society, with the elderly population increasing year by year, presenting broad prospects for the senior care industry. Although the development of senior housing in China started relatively late, it has already attracted participation from real estate and insurance companies. Drawing on foreign experience, large-scale senior living community projects have been developed or operated, offering comprehensive recreational, lifestyle support, and medical care services. A number of distinctive senior housing projects have been successfully built and operated. However, so far, China’s senior care industry has not yet formed a complete system in terms of policies, funding, design, operation, and services. The development and construction of senior housing projects are still in the initial exploratory stage, and a mature development model for senior housing has yet to emerge. In contrast, foreign countries have more mature and diversified definitions and practices in elderly care models and senior housing. This paper will comprehensively compare the aging status, relevant policies, elderly care models, and the construction of senior care facilities in developed countries with the domestic situation. By learning from foreign experience and combining it with China’s actual conditions, it will reveal some prominent issues in the current construction and operation of domestic senior care projects and explore suggestions suitable for the development of domestic elderly care models and senior housing.
