Design of Virtual and Physical Symbiotic Spaces for Immersive Stages Driven by Multimedia Imagery

Abstract
This study examines how multimedia imagery restructures immersive stage space and, within the context of digital performance, explains the generative logic of virtual–physical symbiosis in immersive stages. On the basis of the theatrical functions of imagery, four design types are identified: scene substitution, atmospheric rendering, narrative extension, and interactive symbiosis. Comparative analyses are conducted using representative Chinese and international productions, including Encore Pingyao, Cirque du Soleil’s KÀ, and teamLab’s digital-art environments. In response to recurrent problems in the integration of virtual and physical elements, the study proposes four core strategies: spatial adaptation, virtual–physical balance, dynamic-rhythm coordination, and all-encompassing immersion. The study seeks to improve the design system for immersive visual stage space and to provide theoretical support and practical pathways for spatial innovation and multimedia scenography in contemporary stage art.
